Family Discipleship and Mission Made Simple (Part 1)

Our Christian faith was always meant to be vibrant and lived like a family with others—not a once-a-week experience. Missional communities are a proven (biblical) way to engage people in normal rhythms of family discipleship and mission… believers and not-yet-believers alike.

In this episode of the Everyday Disciple Podcast, we’ll share Part 1 of seven simple steps that will help you lead your folks to a “faith in practice” where family life becomes mission and begins to move outward to include others.

These seven, proven steps may seem simple or even a little obvious, but they really work and are just the beginning… There is no limit to how far this will take you if you apply this to your life.

In This Episode You’ll Learn:

  • What keeps a lot of churches and small groups stuck in a “me-focused” mode.
  • The difference between a weekly small group and a true “family on mission”.
  • Why understanding and embracing a bigger gospel is at the center of a missional life.
  • The first three of seven proven steps to make family discipleship and mission simple.
  • How to get help to start on all of this right away.

Caesar:

You won't live on mission and be a good news people where people wanna join you in that mission.

Caesar:

I'm talking about not yet believers and believers, if you're not about good news mm-hmm . And if your good news is primarily about your afterlife.

Caesar:

Well, yeah, but see people live now.

Caesar:

Sure.

Caesar:

And Jesus came and said, the kingdom is now it's among you.

Caesar:

It's here.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

And he meant and intended that we would now because of his life, death and resurrection and forgiveness and the relationship that's been restored with him and his father that life now would be different.

Caesar:

It would be in line with the kingdom.

Caesar:

Sure.

Caesar:

We would now come under his ruling reign.

Caesar:

And we'd have the life he always creates to live.

Caesar:

So we need to learn how to understand and articulate a much bigger Gospel.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

One that's really good news for everything, right.

Caesar:

Not just about church or our afterlife or, or spiritual things.

Caesar:

Sure.

Caesar:

It's all things are spiritual, right?

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

But I wanna suggest that people wanna understand how Jesus and being his follower will affect their marriages, their parent.

Caesar:

How they spend their money, all of life.

Heath:

Welcome to the Everyday Disciple Podcast where you'll learn how to live with greater intentionality and an integrated faith that naturally fits into every area of life.

Heath:

In other words, discipleship as a lifestyle, this is the stuff your parents,

Heath:

pastors, and seminary professors probably forgot to tell you.

Heath:

And now here's your host Caesar.

Heath:

Kalinowski

Caesar:

Hey, Hey, here we are.

Caesar:

Again, hope you're having a good week.

Caesar:

I've had a great week.

Caesar:

It was busy.

Caesar:

We coached a lot of couples this week.

Caesar:

Some teams who were living on mission and I had to say it was such an encouraging.

Caesar:

Overall week of just reports coming in of so many breakthroughs and what we call evidences of grace.

Caesar:

So many things where people are opening up to the Gospel or they're using their Gospel fluency with others.

Caesar:

And they're like, Hey, I think that made sense.

Caesar:

And it sounded like good news to them, or they're applying the Gospel to new areas of their own life or marriage or hearts.

Caesar:

And anyway, it was a, it was a great week.

Caesar:

So I'm kind of buzzing from.

Caesar:

And I love doing this podcast with you.

Caesar:

So I'm really excited that you're here with me today.

Caesar:

And if you haven't yet, would you join me over in the Facebook group?

Caesar:

So we can touch base a little bit more often over there.

Caesar:

There's the Everyday Disciple Podcast group.

Caesar:

And you can find that by going to everyday Disciple dot com slash Facebook, but over there, we can talk about the show.

Caesar:

You can get links to episodes.

Caesar:

I throw resources in there, or links to things that we talk about on the show, all of that.

Caesar:

And please, while you're at it.

Caesar:

And whenever you're in social media, would you just take a moment and pay it forward?

Caesar:

Like share the love, let someone know that you're digging the Everyday Disciple Podcast, you know, send 'em a specific episode or just a link to everyday Disciple dot com and, you know, let 'em know that there's a lot of good news here for them and help to learn how to live a lifestyle of discipleship.

Caesar:

Now, today on the podcast, I'm gonna be sharing something that will lay a foundation for you on family discipleship and.

Caesar:

Really made simple.

Caesar:

It seems like a good time of the year for this.

Caesar:

Now the steps that Heath and I will talk about deserve your attention and even more.

Caesar:

So your intention to start applying and taking these steps.

Caesar:

If you wanna begin to live as a family, on mission, maybe you're starting a Missional Community with some others, or you're looking to train others in living this.

Caesar:

Maybe even churchwide, which a lot of people have done.

Caesar:

They've taken what we'll talk about here today.

Caesar:

And they've trained their leaders to start Missional communities that naturally flow out of the life and rhythms of their families.

Caesar:

And please listen all the way through, because at the end, I'll share a really cool opportunity for you to be able to jumpstart all of this super intentionally and receive some help to get started.

Caesar:

I think, as you listen through this, you're gonna say, Ooh, yeah, that's, that's easy and we really should get going on.

Caesar:

I'd love to help you.

Caesar:

So I got something kind of planned.

Caesar:

Pretty cool.

Caesar:

So stick around.

Caesar:

You're gonna love this.

Caesar:

Take a listen.

Caesar:

What we're gonna walk through is the very, most basic steps for starting to live on mission with discipleship as a lifestyle.

Caesar:

Hmm.

Caesar:

And that starts with you in the mirror and with your family.

Caesar:

And that's where we're gonna start.

Caesar:

Cuz that's, I mean, you can't do something with others, right.

Caesar:

That you haven't done before.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

And these things that we're gonna share really in way they, they preclude starting a Missional Community, uh, or being in one.

Caesar:

So I'm already in one, but is it healthy and is it reproducing.

Caesar:

If not, perhaps it's because some of these steps, these real basic things got skipped.

Caesar:

Yep.

Caesar:

And that's not your fault

Heath:

this week.

Heath:

What we're gonna do is we're actually gonna really break down those basic steps that will help you move as a family and as a group of friends toward true Missional, living with discipleship, that's built into the normal rhythms of everyday life,

Caesar:

right?

Caesar:

Yep.

Caesar:

In fact, these are the first and really important steps that everyone would need to embrace and grow in.

Caesar:

If they're ever really.

Caesar:

We'll have a healthy Missional life or community.

Caesar:

I kind of said that already.

Caesar:

So, so these are the basic primary steps that lead to a more fully realized Missional life.

Caesar:

So let me start out by telling a little short story here.

Caesar:

Okay.

Caesar:

Okay.

Caesar:

When, cuz cuz I know even some people are still going like yeah.

Caesar:

I don't even know what a Missional Community really looks like yet.

Caesar:

You guys talk about it a lot.

Caesar:

Whatever.

Caesar:

When, when I was a missions pastor, okay.

Caesar:

Worked at a very large church and I was missions pastor.

Caesar:

It was one of my, I had several roles over time, but sure.

Caesar:

Uh, we travel all over the world doing kinds of things and I began.

Caesar:

To feel this tension as I went kind of back and forth from, you know, trips in the field.

Caesar:

To coming back home.

Caesar:

So I'd, I'd be out on a trip.

Caesar:

And, and a lot of the stuff I did on missions was a little hairier than some folks would sign up for.

Caesar:

A guy was calling us into war zones and where there was Christian persecution, natural disaster, stuff like that, but not always, but very often.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

And when we were there, we were with people that were, they had nothing.

Caesar:

And they're super poor and man, they, but they were the church and they loved God and they loved each other.

Caesar:

And man, they really, they had little, but they'd give it all to you.

Caesar:

You'd show up.

Caesar:

You, you literally, we, we used to like kind of joke slash cry about I am wearing and caring in my backpack into the Bush, you know, like Sudan or Burer or something, um, more , uh, more physical wealth than they'll ever own their whole life.

Caesar:

Just between my killer hiking boots, my clothes, my camera, a sat phone.

Caesar:

All right.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

They were the church and it was beautiful how they lived and sacrificed for one another, but they didn't consider it sacrifice and all, but then we come home.

Caesar:

Yep.

Caesar:

And it was, you know, great.

Caesar:

I mean, our church is great.

Caesar:

I don't work there anymore, but it's still a great place.

Caesar:

Great people.

Caesar:

But it was like, wow, it was way more about pulling off Sunday.

Caesar:

And it was quite produced and a lot of stress going into pulling that off.

Caesar:

And, but not a lot of feeling like the family, you know, not a, like, feeling like the church.

Caesar:

Sure.

Caesar:

And.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

Anyway.

Caesar:

And so we started asking ourselves, look, well, like what if we just lived this way all the time?

Caesar:

Mm-hmm , you know, like what we did for weeks, you know, on these trips.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

And as team and living like family kinda having to fight and forgive and get over and all, you know yep.

Caesar:

Can we just live that way here at home?

Caesar:

Hmm.

Caesar:

Like missionaries live.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

And do we get to, yeah.

Caesar:

You know, that's a good question.

Caesar:

And I ask our listeners, you know, if you've ever been on a short term mission trip, you know how like it's hard and you didn't like everybody, but I mean, you had pull together, you had to get past it and you saw God do some amazing things.

Caesar:

And, and most people and having been a missions, pastor, I, I know this really true is true.

Caesar:

A lot, most people come back from mission trips and they go, you know, we did this and this and this for those folks.

Caesar:

Yep.

Caesar:

But you know where the big win was, what God did in my own heart and life.

Caesar:

And.

Caesar:

Hmm.

Caesar:

Why don't we just get to live that way here?

Caesar:

Yeah, well, we do.

Caesar:

That's the thing.

Caesar:

Absolutely.

Caesar:

And so really what's a Missional Community is it's, it's a grouping of families of Oikos mm-hmm, , that's a Greek word for the church really that are saying, Hey, you know what, we're gonna live out of our identity.

Caesar:

You know?

Caesar:

So, you know, we just started wondering like, You know, let's what if we live this way?

Caesar:

Like, what if we start living like missionaries everywhere, believe in our identity.

Caesar:

We, we talked about identity in our birthright back at episode one forty eight.

Caesar:

Just a few weeks back.

Caesar:

Yeah, absolutely.

Caesar:

And so we, a handful of us are in Tacoma, Washington.

Caesar:

We started living like missionaries all the time.

Caesar:

Hmm.

Caesar:

And out of that grew.

Caesar:

A church Soma communities.

Caesar:

And that ended up helping plant lots of churches and anyway, on onward.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

And so what we're gonna talk about today is sort of these seven basic steps or seven moves we call yeah.

Caesar:

That lead to Missional living, but they can't be missed.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

You can't sort of put the cart before the horse and some of these might overlap as we get going, but if you don't have these.

Caesar:

You won't get this live like a missionary here, you know, wherever you live currently be states or overseas, UK, you know, EU wherever in the world.

Caesar:

I can't list all the countries but anyway,

Heath:

okay.

Heath:

So let's get started with the seven steps and I think it's important to clarify on the front end, that there's a lot of how to type ways of doing things.

Heath:

And part of this is being sensitive.

Heath:

Even with these seven guideposts we're gonna have, there's still this, this sense of trusting the spirit.

Heath:

What, what might work here in the Northwest might not work in.

Heath:

You know, when it

Caesar:

comes to the specific, but each of these basic steps yeah.

Caesar:

Will work in any context.

Caesar:

Sure.

Caesar:

So, great point.

Caesar:

Cool.

Caesar:

Let's go.

Caesar:

But, but like I'm not, yeah.

Caesar:

I'm not gonna give examples where you go, like, well, your example, I have to do exactly that.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

Mm, no, maybe, but even in the steps, you'll see, they're not, they're not example specific or old calx specific.

Caesar:

Okay.

Caesar:

Absolutely.

Caesar:

So, okay.

Caesar:

Seven steps.

Caesar:

Let's go.

Caesar:

Okay.

Caesar:

So here we go.

Caesar:

First one is no, one's gonna be surprised if their followers, the show is learn to articulate a much bigger Gospel.

Caesar:

Okay.

Caesar:

We have to see, see you won't live on mission and be a good news.

Caesar:

People living out of a missionary identity where people wanna join you in that mission.

Caesar:

I'm talking about not yet believers and believers, if you're not about good news.

Caesar:

Hmm.

Caesar:

And if your good news is primarily about your afterlife.

Caesar:

Well, yeah, but see people live now.

Caesar:

Sure.

Caesar:

And Jesus came and said, the kingdom is now it's among you.

Caesar:

It's here.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

And he meant.

Caesar:

That and intended that we would now because of his life, death, in the resurrection and a forgiveness and the relationship that's been restored with him and his father and being int by spirit that life now would be different.

Caesar:

It would be in line with the kingdom.

Caesar:

Sure.

Caesar:

We would now come under his rule reign and, and, and we'd have the life he always creates to live.

Caesar:

So we need to learn how to understand and articulate a much bigger Gospel.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

One that's really good news for everything.

Caesar:

Yep.

Caesar:

Not just about church or our afterlife or, or spiritual things.

Caesar:

Sure.

Caesar:

It's all things are spiritual, right?

Caesar:

yeah.

Caesar:

But you know, I wanna suggest that people wanna understand how Jesus and being his follower will affect their marriages, their parenting.

Caesar:

How they spend their money.

Caesar:

All of life.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

All of life, right.

Caesar:

Their identity.

Caesar:

Like we talked about a few weeks ago.

Caesar:

Can you tell 'em that now?

Caesar:

I'm not saying that that's how you start building relationships, but I'm saying, but if you don't even have a Gospel that touches all of life, it was primarily, like I said, a prayer kinda waiting to go to heaven.

Caesar:

And in between, I'm just doing sin management, you know, like, well, you're not gonna that won't lead to a Missional life because a Missional life is fueled by the Gospel.

Caesar:

Yeah, absolutely.

Caesar:

It's all about the Gospel.

Caesar:

Otherwise you're just really nice people in your neighborhood.

Heath:

Right.

Heath:

And it takes a while to, you know, one of the things we've talked about is the way that Jesus' methodology was, was he just invited them into life.

Heath:

Like he approached disciples and said, Hey, come see how I live.

Caesar:

And it was good news.

Caesar:

It was good news.

Caesar:

It wasn't like, Hey, I just, and it cared and contrasted a lot of what they thought.

Caesar:

But it was always good

Heath:

news.

Heath:

Exactly.

Heath:

Which is like you said, the bigger Gospel.

Heath:

Cause a lot of times what we do is we tend to look at, we might not know our neighbor well, and we just found out they lost their job and our first line of defense against them as well.

Heath:

Let me tell you about my savior.

Heath:

Jesus, who died for you.

Heath:

It's like, well, or come to church, why did they good news money?

Heath:

But that's on good news to this situation right now.

Heath:

Cause I'm

Caesar:

struggling with something else.

Caesar:

So right.

Caesar:

And so, you know, we've often referred to this as growing in our Gospel fluency.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

And so first step, and this is a step, you know, That you can get going on now, but it never really ends, but we put it first because growing in our Gospel fluency this, this ability to sort of understand the Gospel and speak it into all of life is so important.

Caesar:

And it's so baseline to everything.

Caesar:

So before we get into the other steps and things, you'll start to do yep.

Caesar:

Or intentionally do differently, maybe you're already doing them.

Caesar:

That is super important.

Caesar:

And can you just imagine if you're listening right now, how different your entire church would be?

Caesar:

If they all just embraced this first step where they could all learn to articulate a bigger Gospel, it was really good news to everybody.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

So people wanted to get closer to them and this body and this community.

Caesar:

Right.

Caesar:

Absolutely.

Caesar:

And if everyone in your church or community were to speak live and enjoy a Gospel that touched every part of life, how different would that be?

Caesar:

Just alone.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

AB it'd be amazing.

Caesar:

And I, and I think that actually is what leads to a Missional life.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

Okay.

Caesar:

But that's why we put it as first step.

Caesar:

Okay.

Caesar:

And then

Heath:

you've got a book out on bigger Gospel.

Heath:

That's incredible

Caesar:

as well.

Caesar:

Yeah, that's right.

Caesar:

And we'll, you know, I'm not hard sell here or anything, but we'll go ahead and put some links in the show notes.

Caesar:

So you can either get that book or you can get the audio book and start listening to it.

Caesar:

Right.

Caesar:

Like in the gym or as an extension of the podcast, even, so.

Caesar:

Okay.

Caesar:

It's just a massive

Heath:

Gospel.

Heath:

Yeah.

Heath:

Yep.

Heath:

So I would, one of the things I would imagine is that.

Heath:

If we're doing this right.

Heath:

We're really never stopped growing in the Gospel, in our gospel fluency.

Heath:

Do we like, do you think we ever actually move on from this first step?

Heath:

Like

Caesar:

step to next two?

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

I mean, we like to put things in steps.

Caesar:

We least do seven steps, seven moves, right?

Caesar:

Yeah, sure.

Caesar:

You learn to move, but the truth is you.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

And I, and I'm not saying I'm not, I'm not suggesting in the least that our listeners don't know the Gospel.

Caesar:

Sure.

Caesar:

But as we've talked about a lot and like you just referenced, you know, episode one 10, um, it's way bigger than we think.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

And part of truly living as a good news bunch of people as a family that brings good news to the neighborhood.

Caesar:

And as a group of families that live on mission together.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

As good news and proclaiming Christ and it's, you're never gonna move on from it.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

And, and, and you can always grow deeper in it.

Caesar:

And so that's why we're saying it's the first step it's really, you're absolutely right.

Caesar:

It's underpinning underlying everything and we'll never really move on.

Caesar:

All right.

Heath:

So, uh, let's move on to that next step that follows this growing in the Gospel.

Caesar:

Step two.

Caesar:

Okay.

Caesar:

So this is the first sort of thing to do, and you're all doing it already, but we're gonna bring some greater intentionality to it and, and here's, and this is why it's next is it's so basic, but it's so important in overlooked is your family dinner times can be so pumped up now with good news.

Caesar:

Yep.

Caesar:

And become such a special time for your family.

Caesar:

And so they, those dinners are, can be so much more meaningful than maybe they are just food consumption, you know?

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

And though they serve as an attractive door.

Caesar:

So to speak into community for others.

Caesar:

Hmm.

Caesar:

It really is low hanging fruit that if, if you're having a family dinner that regularly, that, that there's always a space at the table.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

For people.

Caesar:

And it's like, it's good news.

Caesar:

And it's rich and it's beautiful.

Caesar:

Think about it.

Caesar:

You don't have to really add anything to your schedule or whatever, but so many people you're have never internalized that.

Caesar:

Now it could be any meal of the day.

Caesar:

Okay.

Caesar:

It really can, but I'm just saying, you know, You know, like pick one to three nights per week or meals per week that you put on your calendar and everyone in the family knows they're sacred.

Caesar:

You don't miss 'em.

Caesar:

Yep.

Caesar:

And, and we're gonna have family dinner night call it that . Yeah.

Caesar:

Even in our Missional communities, once they get started, we always carve out a family dinner night.

Caesar:

Sure.

Caesar:

It's key.

Caesar:

And even in our life heath, you know, in our growing Oikos and community, we have it once a month right now.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

But it's gonna get to, hopefully it's gonna be once a week.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

You know, and we'll be able to do that far more often.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

As the rhythms pick up.

Caesar:

But if a family is not having.

Caesar:

Regular family dinner times.

Caesar:

Can I just encourage you please start?

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

You know, I said, well, you know, we're just, we're not used to it or we're so busy or my family never did it.

Caesar:

Gosh, I've heard that so much.

Caesar:

I've had people sit at our table and say, I've never done this before.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

Like what had dinner?

Caesar:

And they're like, not like this, not as a family and not talking about stuff and having a blast and encouraging one another.

Caesar:

Absolutely.

Caesar:

And, and boy, I could give you so much, like like, I give you so much more training on even how to.

Caesar:

Really cool and powerful family dinner.

Caesar:

I'm not talking about turning into a church service.

Caesar:

I'm not talking about that at all.

Caesar:

A blast.

Caesar:

That is a representation of a much bigger Gospel.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

Just while you're eating, having a killer time with your kids.

Heath:

That's a great opportunity too, to like to let your kids choose the meals for the night.

Heath:

You know, let 'em each pick a meal a week that they want to invite 'em into helping prepping dinner with you.

Heath:

Uh, All that's,

Caesar:

there's so many ways to grow communities.

Caesar:

Oh, I mean, there's just so much, so let me ask you, what are, what are your family dinners like, Heath?

Caesar:

I mean, you got a wild crew.

Heath:

yeah.

Heath:

Yeah.

Heath:

I do have four wild

Caesar:

ones.

Caesar:

No, they're great.

Caesar:

I mean, they're great, but I mean they're kids, man.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

And they're, they're going and so.

Caesar:

What do those look like?

Caesar:

And what do you think you could do to be more intentional with Kathleen and the kids?

Caesar:

Yeah, so I,

Heath:

uh, one of the things that we've actually grown in quite a bit lately was just making that intentional, we've set a time that we go, we're thinking ahead through the week.

Heath:

So rather than just, Hey, we're gonna eat dinner.

Heath:

Kind of when we get home, we go this night, we're eating at what time?

Heath:

Five 30.

Heath:

And most of the time we eat at five 30.

Heath:

Uh, Thursday nights, I got some

Caesar:

school, so I'd be growing up for me.

Caesar:

That was it.

Caesar:

5, 5 30, whatever it was.

Caesar:

I can't remember.

Caesar:

Now it's like carved in stone.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

But we go like,

Heath:

Hey, you know, Thursdays I've got school, so it's gonna be six o'clock.

Heath:

But those are, those are firm times that we don't.

Heath:

Take off and it's not like I'm missing a bunch.

Heath:

We eat seven nights a week together, but it's fun.

Heath:

Typically it's the boys and I play, cuz I'll get home from work and the boys and I play while Kathleen's prepping dinner.

Heath:

And then we sit down and usually ask kind of about the day.

Heath:

And one of 'em loves to pray, to open things up.

Heath:

And, but we're always asking questions about the day kids look forward to it.

Heath:

Yeah, absolutely.

Heath:

That's not always the meals that we're eating,

Caesar:

but yeah, they do look forward to it.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

That's kids that's for sure.

Caesar:

I don't like that.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

Mom made it.

Caesar:

You're eating it.

Heath:

yeah, but it seems like it is an important.

Heath:

You know, once they establish that rhythm.

Heath:

And then once you, like you said, once you open it up to something bigger than you, we've got some great people, diversity in our community where we've been able to have them over and go like, uh, one of our friends is from Morocco.

Heath:

It's like, Hey, why don't you bring a dish from Morocco?

Heath:

And sh tell us about like some of your story and your heritage.

Heath:

And so it's a really neat,

Caesar:

melting pot.

Caesar:

Wow.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

And, and notice too, you know, if you're listening to this, what he's saying, this is all really just healthy intentionally mm-hmm , you know, intentional family time at a round of meal that everybody knows, and then starting to, you know, invite others to bless be a part of that blessing.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

But it's not this big, like, oh, gotta get my neighbors over so I can leave my track and make sure they come to church, you know?

Caesar:

If that comes up great.

Caesar:

But that's not the goal of your family.

Caesar:

Dinner nights should be the safe Haven of life where beauty and grace are applied.

Caesar:

It's not where you're fixing problems.

Caesar:

It's not where you're,

Heath:

it's where you have fun you celebrate.

Heath:

But I think one of the things that you said is that we lived for a long time with no intentionality.

Heath:

So I was like, I don't, it's five o'clock what are we doing for dinner tonight?

Heath:

I don't know.

Heath:

Let's just run and grab something.

Heath:

But now that we've actually planned it out and goes like, Hey, next Thursday, we're having this.

Heath:

It allows us to have so much more structure.

Heath:

That we're allowed to have some freedom because we've

Caesar:

already, well, you mentioned earlier, like, like the kids pick or something, you know?

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

Let they pick a week early.

Caesar:

The anticipation level for it is just off the chain.

Caesar:

Right.

Caesar:

then you can

Heath:

ask, 'em like, why'd you pick this and why do you like this meal?

Heath:

And who

Caesar:

do you know?

Caesar:

That would like this, your friends like that?

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

That's that's a weird thing.

Caesar:

We eat.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

Team K we eat it at all.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

So like we eat lots of stuff.

Caesar:

Our friends kids might not enjoy . Sure.

Heath:

So that's kind of our meal time.

Heath:

Now your kids are outta the house, but you and Tina.

Heath:

Still have we still do it?

Caesar:

In fact, I heard Tina organizing the other day and extended family now mm-hmm, both in-laws and aunts and uncles and cousins that have kinda moved into the area.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

She's starting to it's she's throwing the net man family dinner night, like, like, okay.

Caesar:

Let's internalize that beyond just the immediate team.

Caesar:

K.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

In, so,

Heath:

okay, man.

Heath:

So we got time for one more of those seven steps.

Caesar:

Okay.

Caesar:

What is it?

Caesar:

Great.

Caesar:

So the third one is follow.

Caesar:

Follow a trajectory here.

Caesar:

So you're growing in your Gospel.

Caesar:

It's getting bigger.

Caesar:

You're learning to articulate it.

Caesar:

It's not weird.

Caesar:

You out, it's not weird.

Caesar:

Others out.

Caesar:

It's good news to your kids, all that, right?

Caesar:

Yep.

Caesar:

And your friends and all, and you're starting to have meals that are just rich.

Caesar:

They're simple.

Caesar:

They're fun.

Caesar:

And they would, they would be such a cool door into your life.

Caesar:

Sure.

Caesar:

That's really doing us.

Caesar:

We're inviting people into God's life by inviting him into ours.

Caesar:

When the Gospel shapes it.

Caesar:

Third, the third of the seven steps or moves would be, Hey, pick a place.

Caesar:

That is, you know, a natural place in your city or neighborhood.

Caesar:

That's a perfect fit for you to make new friends and build relationships.

Caesar:

Hmm.

Caesar:

Cause you may not have the folks that you'd even begin to invite into a life.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

Right.

Caesar:

Life on life.

Caesar:

And a lot of people say, well, I only have 'em at work.

Caesar:

Sure.

Caesar:

Well, but by work, you know, X mile ways away.

Caesar:

Well, you're not gonna do life with those people probably.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

And if you could like, well, I know I'm from church.

Caesar:

Okay, great.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

Those are friends too.

Caesar:

But if you pick a place that's kind of in your city or neighborhood and you frequent that thing.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

Could be a cafe, could be a pub, could be a restaurant or two, whatever.

Caesar:

And you're starting to get to know the staff you're tipping.

Caesar:

Well, yeah, they're starting to know you.

Caesar:

They wanna introduce you to people.

Caesar:

Yep.

Caesar:

During the holidays, maybe you're bringing little, you know, cookies, whatever.

Caesar:

You're gonna build relationships with people who also live in that area.

Caesar:

Now, if you go to some fast food thing, you know, people just drive through and everything.

Caesar:

You're not gonna build relationships.

Caesar:

So you gotta think, yeah.

Caesar:

And be a little intentional about what kind of places in my neighborhood do.

Caesar:

People kind of hang out a little.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

And either eat their meal or hang out and talk or whatever and everything.

Caesar:

And if we pick the night of the week, let's say, and we start frequenting that mm-hmm or, or maybe it's the gym, you know?

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

But I'm always gonna go at the same time and I'm gonna take a couple of classes, just so I get to know the instructors and get known by the same people.

Caesar:

Cause people generally sign up for class and then they hit it.

Caesar:

Yep.

Caesar:

I'm gonna just intentionally pick a place.

Caesar:

Mm-hmm okay.

Caesar:

And I'm gonna start going there and start ask good questions.

Caesar:

Listen, be generous, whatever the situation is, be generous.

Caesar:

So like if it's a.

Caesar:

Stick around and help the, the instructor pick up the mats and spray down the stuff and towels and all, you know, all that stuff, right?

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

If it's at a cafe.

Caesar:

Person behind you coffee once in a while over tip your barista.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

Set a pub, buy around once in a while or something.

Caesar:

Right.

Caesar:

You know, whatever and be a good listener.

Caesar:

Now, remember not every people group will be a good fit for you.

Caesar:

So think age and stage of life when you pick your place.

Caesar:

So like, you know, if you're listening to this in you're 70, you haven't been to the gym in 20 years, you might not wanna join a CrossFit box.

Caesar:

yeah, sure.

Caesar:

You know what I'm saying?

Caesar:

You know, if you're 20.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

And you don't even drink you, you might not wanna frequent, like.

Caesar:

A martini bar.

Caesar:

Sure.

Caesar:

That lawyers, you know, own and all their lawyer, friends go, it's not gonna be an age and stage doesn't fit for you.

Caesar:

Doesn't so pick that thing where you go, man, I kinda looks like us and we fit in and, and there's more to mission in life than that.

Caesar:

But talk about a basic step.

Caesar:

Like you're growing in your Gospel, you're starting to have meals of intentionality.

Caesar:

That would be really cool to have people too.

Caesar:

And now you're intentionally frequenting a place to build relationships.

Caesar:

Yep.

Caesar:

And kind of, you're keeping your eye out.

Caesar:

And we'll talk about that, you know, next week.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

Like, so then who do I specifically focus on?

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

And that'll be, you know, well, we're gonna get to that in four more steps coming up here.

Caesar:

Okay.

Caesar:

So I'm not gonna say too much more about that, but you wanna pick your place.

Caesar:

That's the third step or the third move.

Caesar:

Yeah, absolutely.

Caesar:

And, and I just wanna say, can you imagine if every Christian was confident enough and intentionally frequenting a few places like that?

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

You know, on mission and building new friendships, how powerful would that be?

Heath:

Amazing.

Heath:

Yeah, I'll share a little bit and our cities will be changed.

Heath:

yeah, I'll share, uh, one of the places I frequent next week is we get into the, to how to pay attention to the people, to press into.

Heath:

Awesome.

Heath:

Cause I've got a cool story there.

Heath:

I wanna hear it.

Heath:

Okay.

Heath:

So we've got, we got through three today.

Heath:

We've got, uh, four next week.

Heath:

Do you wanna throw out what those four are?

Heath:

Do we wanna leave people coming back for more?

Caesar:

I, I just sort of hinted.

Caesar:

Okay.

Caesar:

That's and that's all I'm gonna do.

Caesar:

Okay.

Heath:

I like that.

Heath:

Well, let's get to the big three.

Heath:

Uh, these are the three takeaways we want people leaving with.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

And as always, you can get a printable PDF of this week's big three as a free download by going to everyday Disciple dot com slash big three B I G three.

Caesar:

And we'll send these right away to you.

Heath:

What would you say the big three are for this week?

Caesar:

Okay.

Caesar:

Quickly.

Caesar:

First one, your family is an amazing place to begin.

Caesar:

When starting a Missional Community or wanting to live on mission with others.

Caesar:

Yep.

Caesar:

Instead of like trying to talk a bunch of people into, so, right.

Caesar:

So living as a family worth joining and imitating, that's the goal.

Caesar:

Hmm.

Caesar:

So if, if you're like, well, I don't, we don't really have people over and no one would want to, well, okay.

Caesar:

Begin at the beginning in your own lives.

Caesar:

Yep.

Caesar:

So trying to organize others into a series of activities, churchy things, or Missional events and rhythms that you and those closest to you, aren't already living in it.

Caesar:

Produces unnecessary stress and it'll set you up for failure.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

So start at home, your family God-given to show others what he's like start there.

Caesar:

Yep.

Caesar:

With these seven steps, you've only got two, three.

Caesar:

Okay.

Caesar:

second.

Caesar:

Um, and I, I wanna know wherever you're at.

Caesar:

God loves you right there.

Caesar:

Okay.

Caesar:

But.

Caesar:

Our father did not send his son Jesus, just to get us into heaven.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

He came that we would have this really full life and adventure with him of being his Disciple and making disciples.

Caesar:

And that starts first in the mirror, like I said earlier, and with our own kids and our own church, and then moving outwards.

Caesar:

To including others.

Caesar:

Oh, okay.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

So, but God loves you exactly where you're at.

Caesar:

That's the good news.

Caesar:

You don't have to do this to earn his love or impress him.

Caesar:

You can't in fact.

Caesar:

Okay.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

Jesus already died.

Caesar:

It's finished.

Caesar:

Third is, and this is sort of like the hands on number three is usually like what to do is like get the training and encouragement you need to get started in stay on mission.

Caesar:

Hmm.

Caesar:

It's just it's way too easy to kind of hear, you know, talk like this or hear information like this and give mental ascent to things, you know, nodding an agreement.

Caesar:

Yep.

Caesar:

Yep.

Caesar:

Got some good intentions here.

Caesar:

Good ideas, but never really getting started with new and meaningful practices.

Caesar:

That's why, as I had promised at the top of this episode, I wanna give you access to my most popular course.

Caesar:

The seven moves to Missional.

Caesar:

That includes a much deeper dive into these three steps that we talked about today, and it completely unpacks the next four steps, all seven of the moves to begin living on mission.

Caesar:

Can you imagine having the tools and insights and the confidence that you need to have a close Missional C.

Caesar:

With which you can really live out your faith and share life in the kingdom day to day.

Caesar:

Wouldn't that be awesome.

Caesar:

And can you imagine your kids growing up with a faith that's lived out like day to day in the normal stuff of life with others instead of just on Sundays, that'd be great.

Caesar:

Right.

Caesar:

And I'm hoping you'll start to take action on all that you're hearing.

Caesar:

That's why I'm discounting this course.

Caesar:

The seven moves by 80%.

Caesar:

Yeah.

Caesar:

80% off this already.

Caesar:

and that's worth more than I'm even asking for the course right now, like 80% off.

Caesar:

And I'm not telling you exactly what it is, cuz it's so cheap.

Caesar:

I don't even wanna say . Yeah, I just, this summer and whenever you're hearing this, I just want you to get in on this.

Caesar:

And not only can you get that 30 minute live strategy session with me, but you can get unlimited email access to me and my team as you're going through the course, all that.

Caesar:

Caesar:

Caesar:

At like for pennies, less than if I set up a call.

Caesar:

So anyway, all right.
