Why Discipleship?
Jesus said to Peter and Andrew, "Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men," and immediately they left their nets and followed Him. (Matthew 4:19-20)
That's what Jesus wants to do with us. He invites us to come along on this journey.
How did Peter and Andrew respond? They left their nets... their livelihood, and followed Him, meaning they gave up everything in order to follow Him. Peter and Andrew, along with ten others (known as the twelve disciples) followed Jesus wherever He went, talked with Him, had a strong relationship with Him, and were taught by Him. And the result? They became fishers of men. Jesus' last words to them was like this, "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matthew 28:19-20, known as the Great Commission).
That's what we are called to be and to do. We are called to walk with Him each day - talking to Him, serving for the cause of Christ, learning from His words, etc, - in order to become world changers and make disciples of all nations, as first disciples did after the ascension of Christ.
Being a disciple doesn't mean that you and I will be perfect. No one will be perfect until we are made perfect by God as we see Him face to face in heaven. The first disciples were far from being perfect, but they followed.... they followed to the point of their own death, but not before making disciples of all nations.
Why discipleship? That what Jesus called to do... to be a follower of Christ, who will make a world of difference. You and I, we are every disciples, who walk with Him, talk with Him, serve with Him, learn from Him, etc, so that we can fulfill the great commision of "making disciples of all nations".
So, as an every disciple, let us follow Him wholeheartly - praying, reading and studying God's word, serving for the cause of Christ and for the messege of salvation - for this is the will of God.
